Assign Key Results to Stories

Associate stories with key results to connect execution work with strategic objectives. Assign single or multiple key results to a story to track how work contributes to goals.

Who Assigns Key Results to Stories​

Linking stories to key results enables outcome-based planning:

  • Product Owners assign key results to stories to show how specific features or capabilities contribute to product objectives and measurable outcomes.
  • Scrum Masters facilitate key result assignment during sprint planning to ensure team work aligns with strategic goals.
  • Team Members associate stories with key results during execution to understand how daily work advances measurable objectives.
  • Portfolio Managers review story-to-key-result mappings to understand how development capacity aligns with strategic priorities.

Permission Requirement​

To assign key results to stories: Users need Agility Pro or Premium license with edit access to the story. Only key results from publicly visible objectives can be assigned.

To view assigned key results: All team members with story view access can see associated key results in the OKRs tab.

To remove key result assignments: Users with story edit access can remove any key result association from stories they can edit.

Prerequisites​

  • Agility Pro or Premium license
  • OKR feature enabled (use feature toggle option)
  • Digital.ai Identity Service configured. See Getting Started for details.

Assign Key Results to a Story​

  1. Click the hamburger icon Hamburger icon > Product > Backlog.
  2. Click a story to assign a key result.
  3. In the Story grid, click the OKRs tab.
  4. Click +Assign.
  5. Enter search text (title or description of the key result).
  6. From the listed key results, select an ID and click Assign.

The associated key results display with the following attributes:

  • Key results ID
  • Key results title
  • Objective title
  • Session
  • Owner

Remove Key Results from a Story​

  1. Click the hamburger icon Hamburger icon > Product > Backlog.
  2. Click a story.
  3. In the Story grid, click the OKRs tab.
  4. Select the OKR in the Associated Key Results section.
  5. Click the Remove button next to the selected OKR.

Troubleshooting​

Why can't I find a key result to assign?

Key results must belong to objectives with visibility set to Publicly Readable or Publicly Editable. Private objectives' key results do not appear in the search. Contact the objective owner to change the visibility setting.

Why don't I see the OKRs tab in the story?

The OKR feature toggle must be enabled in your Agility instance. Contact your administrator to enable OKR functionality. Also verify you have Agility Pro or Premium license.

Can I assign multiple key results to one story?

Yes. A story can be associated with multiple key results if the work contributes to multiple objectives. Use the +Assign button to add each key result separately.

What happens to story associations when I delete a key result?

Deleting a key result removes all story associations automatically. Stories remain unchanged but lose the OKR connection. Review associated stories before deleting key results to understand impact.
