Detail Planning
The Detail Planning page provides an overview of sprint activities and task breakdown in Agility.
Overview
The Detail Planning page shows the workitems in the current sprint along with any associated tasks and acceptance tests. Detail Planning is useful for identifying, assigning, and estimating the activities required to complete the backlog scheduled in the sprint.
- In the Sprint Summary section, compare rollup values of the current sprint's contents with those of the last closed sprint.
- In the Backlog Details section, define detailed estimates and track progress directly at the backlog item or defect level. You can also create tasks or tests to further break down work for the team.
Use Tasks to Break Down Stories
Tasks break down a backlog item into manageable units to be worked by the development team. They are typically created during the sprint planning process. Tasks can vary in size based on the development team's experience and the sprint length, but a range of 2 hours to 2 days of effort is often considered an appropriate task size. Tasks can have one or more owners, which allows assignments to an individual or a group of team members.
Reporting at the sprint or project level includes those totals only once for the task.
Track Tasks
Task tracking typically involves updating the following core aspects:
- Owner: Sign up for a task you are taking on
- Status: Update status to reflect tasks that are in progress or completed
- To Do: How many hours remain on the task
- Effort or Done: (Optional based on configuration) Enter how much effort was expended since the last update; Done reflects an accumulation of all entered effort
Task owners can track the status of tasks from the following locations within Digital.ai Agility:
- TeamRooms
- Detail Tracking
- Taskboard
- My Work
Close a task that has been completed and has no remaining work. Closed tasks are filtered out of tracking pages by default, keeping views clean and focused on remaining work.
Edit Tasks or Tests
Edit task and test details directly from the Detail Planning page.
- Click the hamburger menu
> Sprint > Detail Planning.
- Expand a workitem to see the associated tasks or tests.
- Click the Edit button, change the details as appropriate, and click Save.
Reorder Tasks
Reorder tasks within a story or backlog item using one of two methods:
- Add the Order column to the grid, sort by the Order column, and click the arrows to move items up the list or directly to the top, or
- Expand the backlog item or story to display all tasks and tests, and drag and drop the tasks to the appropriate order.
Move Tasks to a Different Backlog Item
Move a task or test to another backlog item by selecting a new parent for it.
Option 1: Edit Task Details
- Select the task you want to move and click Edit.
- In the Task window, click the magnifying glass icon next to the parent backlog.
- In the resulting Parent Backlog window, choose the required new backlog item and click Select.
- Click Save in the Task window.
The task has now been assigned to a new backlog item.
Option 2: Drag and Drop
From the Detail Planning or Detail Tracking grids, drag the task or test and drop it onto a different backlog item.
Use the Backlog Item Planner
The Backlog Item Planner is most helpful during sprint planning, as it allows the team to focus on one backlog item at a time and fully define its details. Here, you can add, edit, and prioritize tasks and acceptance tests for the backlog item by dragging and dropping them to the appropriate location.
- Click the hamburger menu
> Sprint > Detail Planning.
- In the Backlog Items grid, to the right of a backlog item, click Plan Backlog Item.
- In the Backlog Item Planner window, click Add Task or Add Test from the Add Task drop-down.
- Enter the details, and click Save to return to the Story Planner window.
Close the Story Planner window to return to the Detail Planning page.
