Rank and Order Issues in a Grid

For most teams, using the Priority value on issues is sufficient to organize and sort their list. However, some teams might prefer to have specific control over the position of each issue in the list. When in the default display settings, issues are displayed in their rank order. You can change order by dragging and dropping issues up or down the ordered list, or by selecting an issue and clicking Move to Project, which allows you to choose to move the issue to the top or bottom of a page or project.

Who Ranks Issues

  • Scrum Masters: Rank issues by urgency and impact to prioritize impediment resolution during daily standups and sprint tracking.
  • Team Members: Rank their own reported issues to indicate which blockers need immediate attention.
  • Product Owners: Rank issues affecting high-priority backlog items to ensure critical impediments are resolved first.

Permission Requirement

To rank issues, you must have Edit access to the Product Planning or Team Planning area. The grid must be set to the default display settings to enable ranking operations. Drag-and-drop ranking and the Move to Project action require Edit permissions.

Rank Issues

To rank issues:

  1. Click the hamburger menu Hamburger icon and choose one of the following:
    • Product > Input > Issues
    • Team > Sprint Planning > Issues
    • Team > Sprint Tracking > Issues
  2. Select the issue(s) you want to rank, and then select Move to Project > Rank.
  3. Choose the appropriate option from the list.

Troubleshooting

Why can't I drag and drop issues to reorder them?

The grid must be in default display settings to enable drag-and-drop ranking. If you've applied custom sorting or filters, reset the grid to default settings. Verify you have Edit access to the Product Planning or Team Planning area.

Why don't I see the "Rank" option in the Move to Project menu?

You must first select one or more issues in the grid by checking the boxes next to issue rows. The Move to Project menu becomes active after selecting issues. Verify you have Edit permissions for the selected issues.

Why did my ranking changes not persist after refreshing the page?

Ranking changes should persist automatically. If changes are lost, verify that you didn't apply custom sorting after ranking. Custom sorts override rank order. Use Priority values if you need sorting that persists across sessions with custom views.
