Milestones
Milestones mark important dates and events in portfolio delivery. They represent specific points in a project that indicate a stage of development or mark important dates. Milestones act as signposts to track progress and communicate important events to teams and stakeholders.
Permission requirement: Creating and editing milestones requires Project Admin or Portfolio Manager permissions. All users can view milestones on roadmaps and boards.
Who Uses Milestones
Milestones serve different purposes for various roles:
- Portfolio Managers create milestones to mark strategic delivery targets and coordinate dependencies across programs.
- Program Managers use milestones to track PI boundaries, program increment planning events, and cross-team synchronization points.
- Product Owners reference milestones when planning releases and communicating delivery timelines to stakeholders.
- Team Members view milestones to understand key deadlines and coordinate work with other teams.

Troubleshooting
Why don't I see the option to create milestones?
Creating milestones requires Project Admin or Portfolio Manager permissions. If you don't see the add milestone icon on roadmaps or the Milestone option in the sidebar creation menu, verify your permissions with your system administrator. Users with only view or edit permissions can see existing milestones but cannot create new ones.
Why doesn't my milestone appear on the roadmap?
Verify the milestone date falls within the visible date range of your roadmap view. Use the date range selector to expand the view window if needed. Also confirm the milestone is assigned to a project included in your current roadmap scope or filters. Deleted milestones (showing "Deleted" in the title) do not appear on roadmaps until restored using the Undelete function.
Can I associate milestones with specific portfolio items or stories?
Milestones represent dates and events at the project or portfolio level, not individual work items. They appear on roadmaps and program boards to mark important dates but don't have direct associations with specific portfolio items or stories. To connect work to milestones, schedule work items with due dates near the milestone date, or reference the milestone in work item descriptions. Consider using sprints or iterations for work-level time boundaries.
Why can't I recover a deleted milestone?
Deleted milestones remain in the system and can be restored using the Undelete function. If you cannot find a deleted milestone, check the MY RECENT CHANGES panel in the sidebar for recently deleted items. You can also use search functionality to find milestones by name or ID. If the milestone doesn't appear anywhere, it may have been permanently deleted by a system administrator with advanced permissions, in which case recovery is not possible through standard user functions.
