Strategic Theme Scorecard
This article explains how to use the strategic themes scorecard in Agility.
Overview
The Strategic Theme Scorecard shows metrics to help you understand the progress and impact of a Strategic Theme. Using this data, you can:
- view progress
- understand the remaining work and historical trends on work that has already been delivered
- see the impact of the Strategic Theme across your organization
Accessing the Strategic Theme Scorecard
- Anywhere within the system, click on a strategic theme name or ID to display the Strategic Theme Details, and then click on the Scorecard tab.
Understanding the Strategic Theme Scorecard
The Strategic Theme Scorecard is divided into the following sections and shows metrics for the work assigned directly to the selected portfolio item and to all child portfolio items.
Summary Section
The metrics shown in the Summary section (located at the top of the page) are from Portfolio Items that are directly assigned to the Strategic Theme or from Backlog Items ( Backlog Items, Defects, or TestSets) that roll-up to one of the directly assigned Portfolio Items.
- Progress Gauge - Indicates the current percent complete for all Backlog Items.
- Work Breakdown Pie Chart - Indicates the number remaining Backlog Items, broken down by type ( Backlog Items, Defects, or TestSets). This values is always by count in order to account for all Backlog Items.
- Total SWAG - The sum of the SWAG value.
- Total Value - The sum of the Value value.
- Estimate - The sum of the Estimate value on all Backlog Items regardless of whether they are open or closed.
- Un-Estimated - Percentage of active Backlog Items without an Estimate value. This value is calculated by dividing the total number of active Backlog Items without an estimate by the total number of Backlog Items. That value is multiplied by 100 and rounded to 2 decimal places.
- Blocked Work Items - The total number of active Backlog Items that are currently blocked.
- Done - The total amount of Effort reported on Backlog Items.
- Teams - The total number of Teams owning Backlog Items.
- Projects - The total number of active projects or child projects that contain Backlog Items.
Charts Section
The Charts section, located in the middle of the page, contains the Portfolio Item Cumulative Flow and the Work Item Cumulative Flow. The Start Date on these charts is either the create date on the Strategic Theme or the current date minus 1 year, when the Strategic Theme was created more than 1 year ago. The End date on these charts is always the current date.
Portfolio Item Cumulative Flow
Indicates, by Date, the total number of Portfolio Items directly assigned to the Strategic Theme grouped by Reporting Category. If you are not using Reporting Categories, Not Started are Portfolio Items without a Status, In Progress are Portfolio Items with any Status, and Completed are Portfolio Items that have been Closed (aka Archived). This chart does not consider any Portfolio Items Completed before the Start Date.
Work Item Cumulative Flow
Indicates, by Date, the total number of Backlog Items, that roll-up to Portfolio Items directly assigned to the Strategic Theme, grouped by Reporting Category. If you are not using Reporting Categories, Not Started are Backlog Items without a Status, In Progress are Backlog Items with any Status, and Completed are Backlog Items that have been Closed (aka Archived). This chart does not consider any Backlog Items Completed before the Start Date.
Breakdown Section
The Breakdown section (located at the bottom of the page) allows you to decompose the selected Strategic Theme by Active Portfolio Items, Projects, or Teams.
Breakdown by Active Portfolio Item
The Active Portfolio Item Breakdown section provides insight into Portfolio Items directly assigned to the Strategic Theme. Each row represents an open Portfolio Item with a non-blank status value that is directly assigned to the Strategic Theme. There is also a row, labeled "Other", which represents directly assigned Portfolio Item that has a blank status value. Metrics in this breakdown are rolled-up; each value represents all work below the Portfolio Item.
Breakdown by Project
The Project Breakdown section provides insight into how work for the Strategic Theme is distributed across active Projects in your instance. Each row represents a single Project that contains work that is part of this Strategic Theme. There is no Project roll-up; if a parent and child project both contain work, both are listed.
Breakdown by Team
The Team Breakdown section provides insight into the performance of each Team responsible for delivering work for the Strategic Theme. Each row represents a single Team owning Backlog Items assigned to Portfolio Items that are part of this Strategic Theme. Additionally, there is a row to account for Backlog Items not assigned to a team.
Breakdown Options
- Title. The project, portfolio item, or team name
- Progress. Actual percent of completed work. This value is based on count to account for unestimated items.
- Contribution. Indicates how much work this Project, Portfolio Item, or Team contributes to the Strategic Theme.
- Business Value. business value assessed on all Objectives, including Stretch Objectives, at the end of the project.
- Estimate. A roll-up of the total estimate value for all backlog items, defects, or test sets regardless of whether the item is open or closed wherever they exist in the system.
- Unestimated. Percentage of active work that does not have an estimate value. This value is calculated by dividing the total number of active stories without an estimate by the total number of stories and multiplying the answer by 100. Round that answer to 2 decimal places.
- Breakdown. The remaining work by type ( backlog items, defects, or test sets). This value is based on count in order account for unestimated items.
- Productivity. The average number of backlog items, defects, or test sets closed per week for the past 4 weeks. To calculate this number, determine how many items were closed per week for the last 4 weeks. You then find the average and round the value to 1 decimal place.
- Blocked Workitems. The total number of active backlog items, defects, or test sets that are currently blocked. This value is available today from the Strategic Theme Details tab, on the Portfolio Item Grid by adding the "Blocking Issues - Rollup" column.
- Total Effort. This value represents the total amount of Effort reported against any Backlog Item rolls-up to a Portfolio Item directly assigned to this Strategic Theme. This value is available today from the Strategic Theme Details tab, on the Portfolio Item Grid by adding the "Total Done" column. This metric is hidden when Effort tracking is disabled in your instance.
