Visualization Reports
Visualizations are graphical reports that show how items are connected. They are useful because they provide quicker, and better, answers to questions like:
- What is the total impact of a blocking issue?
- How does a portfolio item break-down into work that can be delivered by a team?
- How does a backlog item, defect, or test set fit into the big picture?
- If we choose not to deliver a particular backlog item, is there impact to other backlog items?
Visualizations require HTML5. Internet Explorer 8 does not support HTML5 so cannot display the visualization features.
The sections below describe each visualization report in more detail.
Accessing a Visualization Diagram
Visualization reports are available on the details page of all assets, except Dependencies Visualization Report. The Dependencies Visualization Report is available as an inline report on planning pages.
Types of Visualization Diagrams

| Partition | Portfolio Items are large-grained features that can be decomposed into smaller portfolio items and, ultimately, backlog items, defects and test sets to provide additional detail. The Partition diagram shows a visual representation of this decomposition. It also shows the total Estimate in the top right corner of each box. At the lowest level, this is the Estimate for the work item. At the child portfolio item and portfolio item level, shows a roll-up of all children. Click on a box to zoom-in to the selected level. When viewing the lower levels, you can click on the far left to zoom out one level. |
| Relationships | Relationship diagrams provide a contextual view of a asset by allowing you to see how the asset connects to other assets in the system. Each diagram centers the selected asset and encircles it with related assets. You can turn on or off related assets from the "View Options" menu, located in the top right of the diagram. When a relationship has more than three connections, the relationship collapses to improve the readability of the diagram. You can expand a collapsed relationship by clicking on the icon. Hovering on a card reveals a dialog that provide summary detail. This dialog contains a link that allows you to navigate to the details page for the card. | Backlog Group Tree (Available in the Backlog Groups details page only) | Backlog Groups are functional groupings of backlog items and, optionally, defects and test sets. The tree diagram allows us to visually represent this decomposition. Child nodes are available for sub-themes and the backlog items, defects and test sets contained in the theme. Collapsed nodes can be expanded by clicking on the node. Expanded nodes can be collapsed in the same manner. |
Related Reports
The Dependencies and Portfolio Item Dependencies reports allow you to view all active dependencies defined in a project or program. Reading from left to right, visualizations indicate the sequence necessary to deliver backlog items, defects, test sets, and portfolio items (respectively) in a dependency chain.
