Creating a Geospatial Service Visualization with Areas

You can create a geospatial service visualization with areas.

  1. Create a blank dossier or open an existing one.

  2. Click Insert Visualization to add a new, blank visualization to the dossier.

  3. In the Visualization Gallery, click Geospatial Services

  4. Open the Format panel.

  5. Select Map Options from the first drop-down list.

  6. In the Map Style drop-down list, select the display theme to apply to the map.

  7. Select Formatting on layer from the first drop-down list.

  8. In the Type drop-down list, select Area.

  9. Open the Editor panel.

  10. Drag objects from the Datasets panel to the Editor panel to add the corresponding data to the visualization. You can also drag objects from the Datasets panel directly onto the visualization.

  11. Place the attribute containing the location information for each area in the Geo Attribute area of the Editor panel. These attributes must match the locations defined in the base map.

Note: If your base map defines an area for Japan, the Country attribute should contain an element named Japan.

  12. When you add geo attributes, a corresponding tooltip is added to the Tooltip area. Tooltips display corresponding attributes or metrics when you hover over a map marker. To add more tooltips, place attributes and metrics in the Tooltip area of the Editor panel.

  13. Open the Format panel.

  14. In the Boundaries drop-down list, select the name of the base map to use for displaying areas in the map (for example, Country, Level 1, Postal Code, etc.). This option only appears if your data corresponds with one of these display options.

  15. Open the Editor panel.

  16. To color map areas based on metric values or attribute elements, place one metric or attribute in the Color By area.

  17. If you place a metric or attribute in the Color By area, you can choose to show or hide the map legend. The legend shows the relationship between the color of each marker and the metric value or attribute element for that location. Click Show Legend in the visualization toolbar to display the legend.

  18. If you place a metric in the Color By area, you can define a metric threshold for coloring the map areas. Right-click the metric and choose Thresholds.

  19. You can add multiple layers to a map. To add a layer, click Add in the Layers area.

  20. Click Save.
