Using a visualization to filter the data in another visualization

Once you add visualizations to a dossier, you can use one visualization to filter or highlight data in another visualization. Define one visualization as the source. Then, select the other visualizations you want to filter or highlight as targets. The target visualizations only display or highlight data that also appears in the source. Your target visualization can be in any chapter or page within your dossier.

Note: Open a dossier with two or more visualizations.

To enable a visualization to filter or highlight the data in another visualization

  1. Open the dossier you want to modify.
  2. Hover over the visualization to use as the source and click More in the top right and choose Select Target.
A icon appears in the upper left corner of the source visualization. The name of the source visualization appears after Use visualization at the top of the screen.
Note: If the source visualization is a map visualization with multiple layers, this will prompt you to Use [Layer], and you will need to select the desired layer from the drop-down menu.
  3. In the first drop-down list at the top of the screen, select Filter to allow the source to filter data in the target visualizations. The targets only display data that also appears in the source.
    or
Select Highlight to display all data, but only highlight data that also appears in the source.
  4. Click on the visualizations you want to select as targets. A icon appears in the upper left corner of these visualizations. The names of the target visualizations appear at the top of the screen. If necessary, you can target visualizations across chapters and pages. All targets must be on the same page. Source icons also appear in the Contents panel for the corresponding pages.
  5. If a drop-down list appears after the source visualization names, the visualization was configured in a previous version to update the target when you filter or drill on a single, specific attribute in the source.
Select the attribute name to update data in the target when you filter or drill on the attribute already defined for the source.
    or
Select For All Data to update data in the target when you filter or drill on any data in the source.
  6. Click Apply.
