Creating a derived attribute

You can create an attribute based on an existing object. This attribute is referred to as a derived attribute.

To Create a Derived Attribute

  1. Open the dossier you want to modify.
  2. Create a derived attribute and reserve it for future use in a visualization. In the Datasets panel, click More next to the dataset to add the attribute to and choose Create Attribute.
  3. To manually enter the definition of the derived attribute.
  4. Enter the definition of the derived attribute directly into the right pane. Matching objects appear in a drop-down as you type. Click an object to add it to the definition.
  5. In the Functions pane, click on a function to view its description at the bottom of the dialog. Click Details to view more detailed information about the function and its arguments.
  6. To locate a function, enter its name in Search . You can also browse for a function by selecting a function category (that is, Basic Functions, String Functions, etc.) from the drop-down.
  7. Double-click a function to add it to the derived attribute definition in the right pane.
  8. Hover over the function you want to use and click Edit. In the pop-up dialog, select the required arguments and click Add.
  9. In the Objects pane, locate an object by entering its name in Search. Select Attributes or Metrics from the drop-down to display only attributes or metrics. Select a dataset name from the drop-down, to display objects from that dataset.
  10. Double-click an object to add it to the derived attribute definition in the right pane.
  11. After you finish defining the derived attribute, enter its name in Attribute Name.
  12. A derived attribute contains only the ID attribute form by default, but you can define additional attribute forms for the derived attribute. In the right pane, click the Plus tab. A new tab for an attribute form appears.
  13. On the new tab, define the attribute form using the same options you used to define the ID attribute form. Any attribute forms, in addition to the ID attribute form, must be based on the value of the ID attribute form.
  14. Click Save.
