Splitting a Portfolio Item

Agility now allows users to split a partially completed Portfolio item to a new epic. Using the split option you can move the child workitems of an Epic to a new Epic. The old epic contains the workitems(child portfolio items, tests, stories, tasks) that are in closed state and the new epic contains the workitems that are in open state.

Epic splitting typically occurs at the end of a sprint or iteration. If you discover that only a portion of the work is complete, you can split the epic so the completed work remains under the current epic. The incomplete, open work will be moved to an new epic in the next sprint or iteration. This allows you to get credit for completed work and move the remaining work elsewhere to allow for more accurate accounting.

Steps

  1. Open the Epic which you want to split.
  2. In the Epic window, click the Edit drop-down and select Split.
  3. The split window displays the open and closed workitems associated with the Asset. Click Split.
  4. If required, modify the newly created asset and click Save.

A new epic is created. The open workitems are listed under New Item and the closed workitems are listed under Original Item.

All the relations associated with the original epic are copied to the newly created epic. The fields Split ID and Split From points to the original asset. The fields Split ID and Split From are also part of the customize column.
