What Can I Add to the Portfolio Tree?
The Portfolio Tree supports multiple types of items to help you build a complete project hierarchy from high-level initiatives down to detailed work items.
Items You Can Add to the Portfolio Tree
You can create and manage the following types of items in the Portfolio Tree:
Portfolio Items
High-level features or initiatives that represent significant business value. Portfolio items can be nested to create a hierarchy of parent and child items.
Child Portfolio Items
Break down large portfolio items into smaller, more manageable components. Use multiple levels to represent different scales of work (for example, Epic > Feature > Story).
Backlog Items or Stories
Detailed work items that can be delivered within a single sprint or iteration. These represent the actual development work required to deliver portfolio items.
Defects
Track bugs and issues that need to be fixed. Defects can be associated with portfolio items to understand the quality impact on larger features.
Test Sets
Groups of tests that validate the functionality delivered by portfolio items. Add test sets to ensure quality requirements are defined early.
Strategic Backlog Groups
Available in Ultimate Edition Only
Group top-level portfolio items into Strategic Themes to show how they align with organizational targets and strategic priorities. This helps you:
- Connect portfolio work to company strategy
- Track investment across strategic initiatives
- Make portfolio prioritization decisions based on strategic alignment
Scope and Display
The Portfolio Tree uses the selection in the project navigator to set the initial default scope of portfolio items to display. You can adjust filters and scope to focus on specific areas of your portfolio.
Tips
- Start with high-level portfolio items and break them down progressively
- Use Strategic Themes (Ultimate Edition) to align portfolio work with company goals
- Add tests early to ensure quality is considered from the start
