iOS CarPlay Simulator — Setup and Troubleshooting
The iOS CarPlay Simulator is a tool that allows developers to test and debug their CarPlay apps without needing a physical CarPlay-compatible device. However, users may encounter issues while setting up or using the simulator. This document provides guidance on common setup and troubleshooting steps for the iOS CarPlay Simulator.
Prerequisites
Before using the iOS CarPlay Simulator, ensure that you have the following prerequisites in place:
Xcode and Additional Tools Versions
Ensure that the version of Additional Tools for Xcode strictly matches the version of Xcode installed on the DHM machine. Version mismatches are a common cause of CarPlay simulator failures.
CarPlay Simulator Application Placement
- Download the CarPlay Simulator app from the Additional Tools package
- Move the application file directly to:
/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Applications - Verify it is the actual application file, not an alias or shortcut
- Ensure there are no duplicate or conflicting simulator installations elsewhere on the machine
CarPlay SDK Directory
- Verify that
CarplaySdkis located in~/Library(not in/tmpor other temporary paths) - User must have full read/write permissions to
~/Library/CarplaySdk
Common Issues and Troubleshooting Steps
This section outlines common issues encountered with the iOS CarPlay Simulator and provides troubleshooting steps to resolve them.
Unable to find a running CarPlay simulator process
Cause: This issue may occur when the Simulator process is not running, or cached state preventing new session startup.
Solution:
- Manually verify on the DHM that connected iOS devices display properly in the simulator (black screen indicates permission/SDK path issues)
- Check
CarplaySdklocation and user permissions (see Prerequisites) - Reboot the DHM machine to clear lingering background processes
