Assigning Work Items to a Backlog Goal or Objective

This topic explains how to assign Work Items to a Backlog Goal or Objective.

Overview

You can assign work items to backlog goals (also called "goals" or "objectives") to create a stronger link between the higher level goal and the detailed work being done to achieve it. Backlog goals can be associated with any number of portfolio items, stories, defects or test sets via a many-to-many relationship. There is no need to associate child stories of a selected portfolio item as will automatically be included in rolled up totals for the backlog goal. This association can be made from several places within Digital.ai Agility. Choose the option below that works best for you.

Option 1: On the Backlog Goals or Objectives Page

The Backlog Goals page is only available if the Backlog Goals feature is enabled in your instance. Contact your Digital.ai Agility Administrator for additional details.

  1. Click the hamburger icon Hamburger icon Product > Backlog Goals (or Objectives).
  2. Click on the backlog goal or objective to which you want to assign work items. The details page opens.
  3. Click the Show Relationships button, and then scroll to the Workitems section.
  4. Click the Assign button. The Workitems selection window opens to display all the items available for assignment.
  5. Click Add for each work item you want to assign.

Option 2. Release Scheduling Page

  1. Click the hamburger icon Hamburger icon Release > Release Scheduling (or PI Scheduling).
  2. View the Backlog Goals (or Objectives) tab for a selected scope.
  3. Click on the backlog goal or objective to which you want to assign work items. The details page opens.
  4. Click the Show Relationships button, and then scroll to the Workitems section.
  5. Click the Assign button. The Workitems selection window opens to display all the items available for assignment.
  6. Click Add for each work item you want to assign.

Option 3. On the Backlog Goal Assignment Page

The Backlog Goals page is only available if the Backlog Goals feature is enabled with the "Relate to Backlog Groups instead of Portfolio Items" option selected. Contact your Digital.ai Agility Administrator for additional details.

The Backlog Goal Assignment page is divided into two sections: Backlog Goals and Workitems. The Backlog Goals section (on the left side of the page) shows all of the backlog goals in the project or release. The Workitems section (on the right side of the page) lists all the Backlog Groups, Backlog Items, Defects and Test Sets that are available for assignment.

  1. Click the hamburger icon Hamburger icon Product > Backlog Goals.
  2. Drag a work item from the Workitems grid and drop it into a backlog group in the Backlog Goals section.
  • Note that the overall Estimate for the goal is increased by the estimate of the assigned item. Optionally, you can also drag backlog goals onto the work items that support them. When an item is assigned, both the goal or backlog goal and the work item are updated to reflect the new assignment relationship.
  • For higher-level groupings, you can assign entire backlog groups to a goal or backlog goal so that all of the work items in the backlog group are included in the goal/backlog goal assignment.
