Link Objectives

Link objectives across teams to align individual and team-level goals with company-wide strategic targets.

Objective linking supports alignment across organizational boundaries:

  • Team Leads link team objectives to department or company objectives to demonstrate how team work supports broader goals.
  • Product Owners link product objectives to portfolio objectives to show how product delivery advances strategic initiatives.
  • Portfolio Managers link portfolio objectives to company strategic objectives to ensure investment alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Program Managers link program objectives across value streams to coordinate dependencies and ensure aligned delivery.

Permission Requirement

To link objectives: Users need Agility Pro or Premium license. You can link your own objectives to any publicly visible parent objective.

To create linkable parent objectives: Parent objectives must be set to Publicly Readable or Publicly Editable. Private objectives cannot be linked as parents.

To unlink objectives: Only the creator of the child objective or administrators can remove objective links.

Benefits of Linking OKRs

  • Enhanced Agility: Teams adapt their OKRs to respond to shifting priorities, valuable in fast-paced industries
  • Increased Ownership: Autonomy in setting OKRs encourages team members to take ownership of their contributions
  • Clearer Alignment: Linking individual and team OKRs to company goals clarifies how work directly impacts organizational success

Aligned OKRs

Aligned OKRs extend the linking concept by emphasizing transparency and communication across all levels. Teams set their own objectives while ensuring alignment with overarching company goals. Each team's unique goals contribute to the company's shared vision, offering flexibility in approach but consistency in direction.

Troubleshooting

Why can't I find the objective I want to link as a parent?

Parent objectives must be set to Publicly Readable or Publicly Editable. Private objectives do not appear in the parent objective list. Contact the objective owner to change the visibility setting.

Can I link a key result to another objective?

No. Only objectives can be linked to parent objectives. Key results cannot be linked to create hierarchies. If you need to show relationships between key results, consider cascading the parent objective instead.

Why can't I add multiple parents to an objective?

Each objective can have only one parent objective. This maintains a clear hierarchy and prevents conflicting priorities. If an objective supports multiple goals, consider creating separate child objectives for each parent.

What happens when I unlink an objective from its parent?

Unlinking removes the hierarchical relationship but does not delete the child objective. The objective remains visible in My OKRs and can be linked to a different parent or left independent.
