Close or Delete Releases
Closing or deleting a release is necessary when a release is deployed, deemed inactive, or needs correction due to an error. These actions remove old milestones from active planning views, leading to clearer future forecasts.
A release cannot be closed or deleted until all associated work items are either:
- Completed
- Closed
Who Closes or Deletes Releases
Release Managers close releases after deployment and delivery confirmation, maintaining accurate release history and removing completed milestones from active planning views.
Product Owners verify all work items are complete before requesting release closure, ensuring release objectives were met before marking the release as closed.
Administrators delete releases created in error or delete test releases used during system configuration, maintaining clean release data and accurate planning views.
Program Managers coordinate release closures across multiple teams, ensuring all dependencies are resolved before marking strategic releases as complete.
Permission requirement: Closing and deleting releases requires administrator or release manager permissions. All work items in the release must be closed before these options become available.

Troubleshooting
Why can't I close or delete a release? All work items in the release must be closed first. Check for open stories, defects, or tasks and close them before attempting to close the release.
Why don't I see the Quick Close or Delete options? These options appear only when all work items are closed and you have administrator or release manager permissions. Verify your role and check for remaining open work items.
What happens to closed work items when I delete a release? Work items remain in the system with their historical data intact. The release association is removed, but work items are not deleted.
