Every asset type's **system name** beside its **default display name**.
This table is deliberately exhaustive — it exists so that tooling and AI
agents can resolve a word seen in the UI (or heard from a user) to the
system name a query needs, in one lookup. Humans wanting the story behind
the mapping should start at the
[System Names and Display Names guide](/guides/display-names).

Two caveats govern every row:

- These are the **defaults**. Administrators can rename anything on the
  Terminology page, so a given instance may display different words.
  Generate the table for a specific instance with
  `tools/instance-driver/examples/list-display-names.js --markdown` in
  the documentation repository.
- Where the display name simply repeats the system name, the type has no
  friendlier default — many of those are internal machinery that rarely
  surfaces in the UI.

Some display names have also changed over time: `Scope` has been
displayed as **Project** and, commonly today, **Planning Level** — the
latter arriving as an instance-level terminology override rather than a
shipped default.

## Shipped Template Sets

Beyond per-instance overrides, the product ships methodology **template
sets** — Scrum, XP, DSDM, AgileUP, Catalyst, and Team — that pre-package
terminology on top of the base
([how sets stack and override](/apis/loc-2-v1/template-sets)). Their
asset-type renames are few:

XP ships no renames at all — its terminology is the base set unchanged.
Template sets also rename words that aren't asset types: Scrum, for
example, displays `Customer` as **Product Owner**. So a word you don't
find in the table below may still be a template-set or per-instance
rename of something that is.

## Common Informal Names

Some asset types are usually referred to by words that are neither their
display name nor any terminology entry — the vocabulary people (and the
product's own features) actually use:

When a word from a user matches nothing in the tables above, try it as
one of these before concluding the instance has custom terminology.

## False Friends

A few system names read like something they aren't:

- **`PlanningLevel`** is not the `Scope` asset type, even though instances
  commonly display `Scope` as "Planning Level". `PlanningLevel` is a list
  type — displayed as **Level** — whose values populate the
  `Scope.PlanningLevel` dropdown. When someone says "Planning Level" they
  almost always mean `Scope`.
- **`Message`** has nothing to do with comments or conversations. It is an
  announcement delivered to members' inboxes — displayed as
  **Notification**, with `Recipients`, read `Receipts`, and a `Send`
  operation. Comments live on `Conversation` and `Expression`.
